Tips from Ask Sebby, an Expert in Personal Finance

The Ask Sebby team first discovered Plastiq when we were researching ways to maximize credit card rewards with our everyday spend.

San Francisco has some of the highest rent prices in the nation, and we wanted to “earn” something back. As of Sept 2018, the average rent in SF is $3,735 per Rent Jungle. For premium travel credit cards, the minimum spend requirement to earn a welcome offer is $5,000 within the first three months of account opening.

Plastiq was the perfect solution to use a credit card to pay rent while meeting the minimum spending requirement on a new credit card to earn the welcome bonus. Imagine getting a first class flight or a few nights at a luxury hotel just for paying your rent with a credit card.

What about the *2.85% fee?

Sure, there is a 2.85% fee, but I’ll happily pay $128.50 in Plastiq fees for a first class international flight that retails $14,000. On our most recent trip to Dubai, we stayed three nights at a $2,500/night all-inclusive resort for free using a welcome offer from the (now discontinued) Chase Ritz-Carlton credit card.

By using Plastiq, we paid $125 in (Plastiq) fees for $7,500 in value at one of the most exclusive resorts in the world. That’s a no-brainer.

If you use a referral link to try Plastiq, you can get $500 fee-free dollars after spending $500. Plastiq also runs a few promotions throughout the year, so if you play your cards right, there are often opportunities to earn more fee-free dollars.

For example, one of our favorite Plastiq promotions was when existing members could get $250 fee-free dollars for each Mastercard payment via MasterPass (unlimited use!).

Why Plastiq?

Our goal at Ask Sebby is to help people travel for (practically) free with their everyday spend. We don’t partner with brands often, but when we do, it has to be a product we love.

Plastiq is a product that we use because of the ridiculously high rent in San Francisco. If our community can get more from a payment they were going to make regardless (rent, taxes, car payment), then it’s a win for everyone.

Partnering with Plastiq has helped our community find creative ways to earn points on payments to merchants that they wouldn’t have otherwise been able to do.

We love getting stories from our community about how they paid two months of rent via Plastiq and received a free round-trip flight in the process by meeting the minimum spend requirement on a new credit card.

Paying wedding vendors that usually prefer cash or check was another interesting use case we’ve seen. A few people have gotten their honeymoon for practically free by using the right credit cards with Plasitq to pay for wedding expenses or bills they would’ve paid for regardless.

We’re fans of how Plastiq gives their influencers creative freedom to create content. Whenever I create a review video, I’m brutally honest, and I’ll review the pros and cons of the product.

We want our subscribers to get the best value, so we encourage people to use a partner product only when it makes sense for them. Learn how I use Plastiq here!
